The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) and the Republic of Fiji Navy have formalized a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), reinforcing their shared commitment to protecting Fiji’s borders, marine ecosystems, and national security.
This landmark agreement highlights enhanced cooperation in maritime surveillance, resource sharing, and a coordinated approach to enforcing each organization’s legislative mandates. By aligning their efforts, both agencies aim to strengthen compliance, improve operational efficiency, and ensure a unified national response to biosecurity and maritime threats.
The partnership will enable joint operations, intelligence sharing, and capacity building initiatives, ensuring that Fiji remains resilient against risks such as illegal trafficking, invasive species, and other cross-border threats.
Commander of the Republic of Fiji Navy, Commodore Timoci Natuva, also highlighted the value of the agreement.
“The value of the agreement in ensuring maritime border agencies operationalise collaboration through synchronized action and practical cooperation. We all work for a common purpose and that is ensuring a safe and secure Fiji for all.”
Acting Chief Executive Officer of BAF, Mr. Surend Pratap, emphasized the importance of the collaboration.
“This MOU represents a significant step forward in strengthening Fiji’s biosecurity systems. By working closely with the Fiji Navy, we are enhancing our ability to detect, deter, and respond to threats at our maritime borders. This partnership ensures a more coordinated and effective approach to safeguarding our nation’s natural resources and economy.”
The MOU underscores the Government of Fiji’s commitment to inter-agency collaboration and proactive governance in addressing evolving security and biosecurity challenges.
